A New Look

AUGUST 2019

The Burlingame B logo was designed to reflect its boldness and pursuit of the truth. The publication's policy statement states that the newspaper serves as an "open forum for student expression". The content printed may not necessarily reflect the opinion of the school, but that of the writer.

Branding

The Process

How it began

The B's original heading will forever hold a special place in my heart, but our publication was in need of a new image that captured our values and our identity. At the time, The Burlingame B did not have a logo/icon for its social media pages.

The B was started in 2013 when Instagram and social media was not as prominent as it is now. Thus, the newspaper did not have a consistent branding that could be used for both its header and social media.

The first sketches were created in a logo workshop on JEANC's NorCal Media Day. Scribbled on a piece of notebook paper for fun next to cups of bitter black coffee, a fellow page designer and I brainstormed iterations that incorporated our publication's values.

First Iterations

I digitized the renditions and created a few iterations. These renditions captured the power of the pen and the publication's name: The Burlingame B.

The Final Design

The final heading uses The Burlingame B's signature typeface: Adobe Garamond Pro. The heading features a new icon that represents the publication's boldness and pursuit of the truth. The fountain pen silhouette is poised with intentionality and perseverance that writers in the publication strive to uphold everyday.

On March 13, California schools closed and The Burlingame B went virtual. We played an important role in keeping students and faculty informed on the local news.

As Chief Design Editor, I had to quickly devise a system for virtual publication while designing graphics that kept my community well-informed in times of confusion and stress.

We reached 2000+ readers with our social media in March.

March 2020 Issue

I created graphics to reach students for our March Issue that contained important COVID-19 updates and how the pandemic lockdown affected the people in my community.

Celebrating our Athletes

Sports seasons and award ceremonies were cancelled. Many graduating athletes did not have the chance to celebrate their achievements. So, we created a series of Instagram posts that featured athletes and their accomplishments.
